This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the service procedure and the position of the relay on the fender splash shield, Figure 24. The old position may allow moisture to enter the relay.
ISSUE: Compressor clutch slippage may result from high system pressures or low supply voltage to the clutch field coil. This condition will cause pulley and hub wear.
ACTION: To correct this, install a new jumper wire harness and relay using the following procedure.
1. Check compressor clutch for damage and replace as needed. Refer to the 1984 or 1985 Car Shop Manual, Section 36-39-3.
2. Check voltage, using Rotunda DVOM 007- 00001, at clutch coil connector (black wire with yellow hash) and find out which of the following voltages exist.
NOTE: All voltage checks MUST be performed under these conditions:
* Engine running.
* Headlamps on.
* A/C set to Maximum with blower on high.
* Wait five (5) minutes.
a. No Voltage - Disconnect wire connector from clutch cycling pressure switch at top of accumulator/drier. Connect a jumper wire across harness connector contacts and recheck for voltage at field coil. If there is still no voltage, remove jumper wire and reconnect harness connector to cycling pressure switch. Refer to the appropriate Electrical Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM) for compressor clutch circuit and cooling fan controller diagnosis.
b. Voltage OK (Above 10.5 Volts) - Check clutch air gap using the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 36-39-4, Steps 6 and 7.
NOTE: Compressor and engine must be cooled down prior to check by hand.
If air gap is set correctly, make sure compressor will turn easily by hand. If compressor does not turn easily, replace compressor using the instructions in the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 36-47-37.
c. Low Voltage (10.5 Volts or Less) - Install a clutch coil jumper assembly and relay using the following procedure.
Figure 24:
Clutch Coil Jumper Assembly and Relay
Installation - 1984 Models Only
1. Drill a 1/8 inch hole in right front splash shield near base of strut tower, Figure 24. Install relay (E3TZ-9345-A) with a suitable screw.
NOTE: Relay connector should be positioned facing inboard.
Figure 25:
Figure 26:
2. Locate the GRAY, four-terminal connector (connected to black, yellow hash wire) in clutch circuit, Figure 25. Separate two halves of the four-terminal connector and plug mating connectors of jumper harness (E43Z-19B573-A) to separated connector, Figure 26.
Figure 25:
3. Disconnect the GRAY internal ground connector with black wires, Figure 25. Insert mating connectors of the E43Z-19B573-A jumper harness between the disconnected internal ground connectors.
4. Connect jumper harness GREEN connector to relay, E3TZ-9345-A.
5. Route service clutch coil lead (19B573) along right fender to dash panel and across dash panel to starter motor relay on left fender splash shield. Secure lead wire with existing wire clips along dash panel.
6. Connect eyelet of jumper harness lead wire to the positive battery terminal of the starter relay.
7. Start engine and set A/C system for Maximum. Check for compressor clutch engagement and engine cooling fan operation.

2. Disconnect the GRAY clutch harness two-wire connector at rear of alternator, Figure 27. Insert the two (2) mating gray connectors of E53Z- 19B573-A jumper harness between disconnected connectors. Then, route jumper wire along the 14290 harness (leading to alternator) to relay. Tape jumper harness to alternator harness as necessary.
3. Connect jumper harness GREEN connector to relay, E3TZ-9345-A.
4. Route service clutch coil lead (19B573) along right fender to dash panel and across dash panel to starter motor relay on left fender splash shield. Secure lead wire with existing wire clips along dash panel.
5. Connect eyelet of jumper harness lead wire to the positive battery terminal of the starter relay.
6. Start engine and set A/C system for Maximum. Check for compressor clutch engagement and engine cooling fan operation.
