Hard starting, surge on driveaway or hesitation on driveaway (all after a hot soak) may be caused by high underhood temperatures after engine shutdown. These concerns may be corrected by reworking the cooling fan system to allow the fan to continue to run for a while with the key off to reduce underhood temperatures during hot soak.

Figure 14DUTY CYCLE SOLENOID (MOUNTED ON ENGINE BULKHEAD):

NOTE: Before reworking the cooling fan control system, check the Fuel Control Solenoid vacuum tee for blockage. (See Figure 14). If blockage is evident, replace the solenoid. This could be the cause of the drive conditions.

1. Refer to the 1984 Powertrain Car Shop Manual, Volume "E", pages 27-10-9, 27-10-10, and 27- 10-23 for circuit diagrams.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

3. Perform the appropriate procedure based on vehicle equipment.

VEHICLES WITH A/C - 50 STATES 50 States with ATX
A. Remove fan controller (located behind glove box door opening) from vehicle by prying up the locking tab on bracket and pulling down on controller. Disconnect the harness connector.

B. Remove mounting bracket from new fan controller (see parts application chart), and install new controller on old existing bracket mounted in vehicle. Reconnect the harness connector.
C. Proceed to Step 4.

50 States with MTX
A. Remove fan controller (located behind glove box door opening) from vehicle by prying up the locking tab on bracket and pulling down on controller. Disconnect the harness connector.

B. Remove mounting bracket from new fan controller and install new controller (see parts application chart) using old existing bracket mounted in vehicle.

C. Before reinstalling harness connector, remove terminal and wire from Cavity No. 2 in connector (circuit 511, Light Green). Cut terminal off and tape wire back. (See Figure 15).
NOTE: Make sure bare end of wire is covered with tape.

D. Proceed to Step 4.
Canada
A. Remove the fan controller and bracket assembly and install the new controller/bracket assembly. (See parts application chart).

VEHICLES WITHOUT A/C - 50 STATES

Figure 14DUTY CYCLE SOLENOID (MOUNTED ON ENGINE BULKHEAD):

A. Disconnect the cooling fan motor relay (located behind glove box door opening) connector. Cut the grey/yellow stripe wire (circuit 687) about 4 inches from connector and tape the wire end back (Figure 14).

Figure 16 - VEHICLES WITHOUT A/C -50 STATES AND CANADA:

B. Using a wiring tap (Part No. C7AZ-14487-B, take remaining grey/yellow stripe wire and tap into the yellow wire (circuit 37) near the harness connector. (See Figure 16).
C. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

D. Place the ignition switch in the off position and verify that fan runs by disconnecting the coolant temperature switch and connecting a jumper wire across the two terminals of the harness connector.

Figure 17 - Fan Cooling Decal:

E. The fan cooling decal, located on the fan shroud, must be altered with a sharpie pen as shown above.
NOTE: Inform customers that cooling fan may run on after engine is shut down.
