Hard starting, surge on driveaway or hesitation on driveaway (all after a hot soak) may be caused by high underhood temperatures after engine shutdown. These concerns may be corrected by reworking the cooling fan system to allow the fan to continue to run for a while with the key off to reduce underhood temperatures during hot soak.
If a customer is experiencing the above concern, only during high ambient temperatures, the following procedures may correct this concern.
To create a fan after run condition (i.e. cooling fan runs with key off) (refer to the 1984 Car Shop Manual Volum "E" pages 27-10-9, 27-10-10 and 27-10-23 for circuit diagrams). Perform the following rework:
Figure 6 - DUTY CYCLE SOLENOID (MOUNTED ON ENGINE BULKHEAD):
1. Before reviewing the cooling fan control, check the feedback solenoid vacuum tee for blockage (See Figure 6). If any blockage is evident the tee should be replaced. This should correct the drive concern. If there is no blockage in the tee, proceed with the fan control rewiring.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Locate the cooling fan control module (cars with A/C) or the cooling fan motor relay (cars without A/C), which are mounted on the right hand cowl panel behind the dash board. Access can be gained through the glove box door opening.
4. VEHICILES WITH A/C - 50 STATES 50 States with ATX
1. Remove fan controller from vehicle by prying up the locking tab on bracket and pulling down on controller. Disconnect the connector.
2. Remove bracket from new fan controller and install controller on existing bracket mounted in vehicle. Install connector.
50 States with MTX
1. Remove fan controller from vehicle by prying up the locking tab on bracket and pulling down on controller. Disconnect the connector.
2. Remove bracket from new fan controller and install controller on existing bracket mounted in vehicle.
Figure 7 - Connector:
3. Before installing connector, remove the terminal and wire from Cavity No. 2 in connector (511 circuit light green). Cut terminal off and tape back the wire coming from the wiring harness (See Figure 7).
NOTE: Make sure bare end of wire is covered with tape.
VEHICLES WITHOUT A/C - 50 STATES
Figure 8 - Connector and Wiring Harness:
1. Disconnect relay connector and cut the grey/ yellow stripe wire (687 circuit) about 4 inches from the connector and tape back the end coming from wiring harness (See Figure 8).
NOTE: Make sure bare end of wire is covered with tape.
2. Using wiring tape (Part Number C7AZ-14487-B), take remaining grey/yellow stripe wire and tap into the yellow wire (37 circuit) coming from connector. (Figure 8).

5. Reconnect the battery terminal.
6. With the key in the off position verify that the fan runs by disconnecting the connector at the coolant temperature switch and shorting out the two terminals.
NOTE: Inform customer that cooling fan may run on, after engine shut down.
Figure 9 - Cooling Fan Decal:
7. This information is shown on cooling fan decal, located on fan shroud.
Along with informing customer of the cooling fan running after engine shut down, mark Fan Warning with a "Sharpie" pen as shown in Figure 9.
NOTE: Decal is located under hood on fan shroud.
