HESITATION/SURGE - ACCELERATION FROM STEADY SPEEDS/INITIAL DRIVEAWAY (2.3L HSC) - WARM/ COLD ENGINE

CALIBRATION: 4-26K-R22

Vehicles which exhibit conditions of hesitation/surge during acceleration from steady speeds or initial driveaway can be serviced by modifying the vacuum signal to the carburetor fuel control solenoid.


NOTE: Only a few hundred 4-26K-R22 units were built in early December, 1983.

1. Remove engine electrical/vacuum harness sight shield at cowl by removing two retaining pins.

2. Cut the manifold vacuum line (black/red stripe) approximately 1-1/2" from the plastic vacuum line and install a 3/16" angled "T" connector, part number 383008-S as shown in Figure 10.

NOTE: Two black with red stripe vacuum lines are shown in Figure 10 which go to an intake manifold fitting. DO NOT CUT the vacuum line which contains the blue/black check valve.

3. Remove the vacuum line from the lower front port of the carburetor fuel control solenoid and install a 3/16" plastic connector, part number 383003-S and cap (382444-S) as shown in Figure 10.
4. Install an 8" piece of 5/32" vacuum hose, part number D0PZ-12226-B to the lower front port of the carburetor fuel control solenoid, and the 3/16" angled "T" as shown in Figure 10.

5. Install a Ford modification decal denoting changes revising the calibration decal from 4-26K-R22 to 4-26K-R24.




Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
