Fuel Control Solenoid - Surge/Miss On Acceleration

CALIBRATIONS: 4-25E-R01, 4-25F-R0
If a vehicle exhibits a surging and/or missing condition on acceleration in 2nd or 3rd gears (warm engine) with A/C off, perform the EEC IV Diagnostic Quick Test, If system is OK, perform the following modification procedure.
1. Remove sight shield by removing two retaining pins and save.

2. Remove the black vacuum line at the bottom port of the fuel control solenoid and cap at the three-way tee (Figure 31).

3. Install vacuum tee (373846-S) into the vacuum line and install vacuum check valve (D9AE-12A197- AA) and a 2 cubic inch reservoir (D6TE-9E453-A) in the vacuum line and connect to bottom port of
the fuel control solenoid. (See Figure 32). The 2 cubic inch reservoir goes between the check valve and the fuel control solenoid.
NOTE: The 2 cubic inch reservoir has 7/32" fittings and the vacuum line is 5/32". 383004-S connectors can be used to make the fittings compatible.
4. Install vacuum tee (383008-S) into EGR valve vacuum line and install a 2 cubic inch vacuum reservoir with one port capped (382443-S). (See Figure 32). Use bulk 7/32 vacuum tubing to connect vacuum reservoir to 1/4" leg of vacuum tee. Insure hose does not kink.
5. Band all vacuum lines and components.
6. Install sight shield.
7. Perform a 3-mile drive from a stop and accelerate to 55 mph with light medium and heavy acceleration to verify the above concern has been alleviated.

8. If drive concern persists, replace carburetor.
NOTE: After completing this procedure, a Ford Modification Sticker must be installed (See Figures 33 and 34 for vacuum schematics).
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
