83ford5 Article No. 83-24-3

NOISE (RATTLE) - GLOVE BOX DOOR LOCK

FORD 1983 T-BIRD, MUSTANG, LTD; 1984 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983 COUGAR, CAPRI, MARQUIS; 1984 TOPAZ

LIGHT TRUCKS 1984 BRONCO II

Some vehicles built before July 6, 1983 may exhibit a rattle from the glove box lock cylinder when the vehicle is driven over rough roads. To service this concern, replace the glove box door latch assembly with a new improved design latch.

Figure 12:

Figure 13:

1. Insert the glove box key into the glove box lock cylinder and open the glove box door.
2. Using a large paper clip or equivalent 1/16" diameter wire (Figure 12), insert the end into the small hole located at the top of the latch case and depress the lock tab to release the lock cylinder and key (Figure 13).

Figure 14:

3. Remove the lock cylinder with the key still inserted.
4. Depress the plastic tab on each side of the latch assembly simultaneously and rotate the latch assembly clockwise to remove it from the glove box door retainer slots.

NOTE: Dealers may fabricate a tool from a piece of sheet metal as shown in Figure 14 to facilitate latch removal.

Figure 15:

5. Remove the anti-rattle spring (06121) from the striker assembly mounted on the instrument panel on those vehicles so equipped. This part is not required with the new latch assemblies (Figure 15).
6. Install the new latch assembly (E4DZ-5406072-B) into the two slots of the glove box door.
7. Turn the latch assembly counterclockwise so that the latch striker is in a vertical position. An audible "click" will be heard when the latch is properly set into the glove box door retainer slots.

NOTE: Mustang/Capri latch assembly is positioned 90~ clockwise for correct installed position.

8. Install the lock cylinder (removed in Step #3 above). Assure that the lock tumblers are upright and the cylinder is set/pushed all the way into the latch.
9. Function glove box door to assure the door is tight
against the door bumpers to preclude door movement. The striker may be adjusted fore/aft as necessary to eliminate door movement.
