BRAKE - PARKING - LIGHT STAYS ON WHEN PARKING BRAKE IS RELEASED
FORD 1984 TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 TOPAZ
If the parking brake indicator light stays on when the parking brake is released, the following service action should be taken:
1. Visually inspect the underside of the parking brake lever slotted boot by lifting up the rubber in the slotted area. If the underside of the boot (E3FZ-2A713- A) shows evidence of a waxy type lubricant along the slotted area, proceed to steps two or three. If wax lube is not present, the underside of all areas next to the boot slot should be lubricated. Use a locally obtained lubricant, such as American Grease Stick "Door Ease", Johnson Wax No. 140 Stick Wax, or equivalent.

2. On vehicles equipped with power windows and/or power door locks, the wire routing of the E43Z- 14584-A wire harnesses and connectors should be inspected and rerouted if interference is found (Figure 5). Visual inspection through the boot slot will generally be sufficient. If interference is found, it will be necessary to remove the console or consolette using the 1984 Tempo/Topaz Shop Manual, Section 45-31 to route the wiring correctly.
3. Check the parking brake control assembly for freedom of movement during operation and for proper adjustment. If adjustment is not as specified in the 1984 Tempo/Topaz Shop Manual, Section 12-70, it should be adjusted. Proper adjustment will ensure some spring back to the off position if all other conditions are as specified in this article.
