Throttle Position Sensor - Rough Idle/Detonation

83ford6 Article No. 83-23-12

IDLE - ROUGH - DETONATION - 2.3L HSC

FORD 1984 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 TOPAZ

The above vehicles built before September 8, 1983 may exhibit an erratic carb idle and/or detonation on acceleration. This symptom may be caused by an oversized female terminal in one of the three positions in the Throttle Position Sensor (TSP). This condition can prevent the EEC module from receiving the signal from the Throttle Position Sensor.

If the vehicle has the above customer concern check the Throttle Position Sensor connector by the following procedure:

1. Remove the wiring connector from the Throttle Position Sensor.

Figure 6:

2. Attempt to insert the shaft of a new #52 drill (.063) in. to all three terminals of the connector. DO NOT FORCE. If the drill goes freely into the terminal nearest the square corner, the terminal must be replaced. SEE FIGURE 6, VIEW "B" AND "C" FOR DETAILS.

NEVER use a probe tool larger than a #52 drill.
