Subject:
Owner Notification Program M63 One-Time Goodwill Inspection Allowance.

Purpose

^ Provide dealers a review guideline to determine if input shaft seal leakage exists.

^ Provide dealers a one-time customer goodwill inspection allowance.

^ Provide dealers with unique claiming instructions.

Description

The M63 program was released as an extended coverage replacement program for the rack and pinion power steering gear should input shaft seal leakage be encountered. Customers are expected to return their vehicles to dealers for steering gear assembly replacement if, and only if, input shaft seal leakage is suspected. This program does not include an in-car inspection procedure to verify the condition. Dealers are expected to verify the condition before gear replacement by verbally reviewing symptoms with the customer.

The following points should be covered with the customer:

^ Has there been a perceptible amount of increased steering effort?

^ Has there been fluid loss in the power steering pump? Has power steering fluid been added to the pump?

^ Has fluid deposit (red in color) been noticed underneath the car in the vicinity of the input shaft seal (approximately in line with the back of the front wheels and left of the centre-line of the car)?

If discussions with the customer support an input shaft seal leak then the dealer should proceed with the gear assembly replacement.

Some dealers have reported that in a few instances customers are not satisfied with only a verbal review of the symptoms but are demanding an in-car input shaft seal inspection at no cost. Effective September 1, 1988 the Company will provide dealers with a ONE-TIME ONLY goodwill inspection allowance to support these situations.

Administration Of One-Time Inspection Allowance

A one-time goodwill inspection allowance will be permitted under the following conditions:

^ a verbal review of the symptoms has been conducted with the customer.

^ the program coverage and guidelines have been reviewed and understood by the customer.

^ the customer understands how to interpret the symptoms associated with an input shaft seal leak.

^ the customer is unwilling to accept the dealers confirming position that gear replacement is not required at this time.

^ the customer understands the inspection will be performed at no charge and that the inspection is being performed on a one-time only goodwill basis.

Inspection Procedure

^ remove steering column tube boot.

^ inspect for input shaft seal leakage.
