TRANMISSION - AUTOMATIC - AOD
- DESCRIPTION OF CHANGE
FORD 1985 FORD, T-BIRD, LTD, MUSTANG
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 MERCURY, COUGAR, MARQUIS, CAPRI, LINCOLN, MARK VII, CONTINENTAL
LIGHT TRUCKS 1985 F & E-SERIES, BRONCO
AOD transmissions will have the following changes incorporated for the 1985 model vehicles.
Twenty-six (26) transmission models are currently released for the 1985 Automatic Overdrive Transmission (AOD) program: Nineteen (19) passenger car models and seven (7) models for the F-Series/Econoline/ Bronco applications. This is an increase of three (3) Transmission models from twenty-three (23) models for 1984.
New to AOD will be the release of the 5.0L EFI (multipoint electronic fuel injection) engine for both the 4x2 and 4x4 F150/250 Series and the Bronco vehicle line. The 5.0L carbureted engine will then only be available on the Econoline series vehicle and some passenger car models. Four (4) new transmission models will be required for the 5.0L EFI application and all are scheduled for a post Job #1 (1985-1/2) introduction date.
Other AOD transmission model changes involve the combination of the 3.8L applications into two (2) models (was four in 1984). The 3.8L models will have a new converter damper calibration which will allow eliminating the high inertia flywheel. The Mark LSC (luxury sport coupe) will be released with the 5.0L H.O. engine. A 2.73 axle ratio will be offered on both 5.0L 50S Mark VII and the 5.0L California T-Bird/Cougar.
All AOD converters will have internal component changes affecting parts interchangeability. The oneway clutch will be reduced from 1 in. to .8 in. This will require thrust washer. The new parts are not interchangeable with the prior model design.
Major Design Revisions Affecting Serviceability for the 5.0L EFI 4x4 Bronco and F-Series Applications
^ Two (2) new transmission models for axle ratios.
^ Vent tube assembly replaces vent cap.
^ New service case for the vent tube (same case as production).
^ New output shaft (piloted).
^ Thrust washer is used in the #2 position. All other AOD light truck applications use a needle bearing.
^ Reverse clutch drum and clutch pack count same as the 5.8L package (4 friction, 3 steel). Reverse clutch drum identified by no groove on the drum lugs.
^ New oil level indicator assembly. Cap I.D. color -dark green.
^ New oil pan: incorporates a depressed area in the center of the pan to keep the filter pickup in fluid for vehicle gradeability.
^ New main control oil filter and grommet assembly. The filter pickup is longer to package into the depressed area of the oil pan.
^ New extension assembly to accomodate the transfer case, ^ Longer extension housing bolts. Bolts used in holes 1, 2, 3, and 6 are 40 mm long. Bolts used in holes 4 and 5 are 65 mm long. (All other AOD models use bolts 28 mm long.) The bottom 3 bolts (3, 4, 5) remain coated with sealant.
Major Design Changes Affecting Serviceability for the 5.0L EFI 4x2 F-Series Applications
^ Two (2) transmission models for axle ratios.
^ New reverse clutch drum. The clutch plate count is the same as the 5.8L application, but the drum is revised to accomodate a needle bearing in the #2 position. The new drum is identified by 3 grooves on the drum lugs.
Major Design Changes Affecting Serviceability for Both 5.0L EFI 4x2 and 4x4 F-Series/Bronco
^ All 5.0L EFI models will use cable control for the TV system similar to that used on the 4.9L models. The TV cable adjustment will be the same except that no retraction of the idle speed control plunger will be required. The throttle body on the 5.0L EFI engine will have no fast idle cam and will use an air bypass idle speed control that does not affect the throttle lever position.
^ Forward clutch pack increased by 1 friction plate and 1 steel plate. (Total plate count is 5 friction and 5 steel.) This is same as 5.8L package.
^ Forward clutch cylinder and turbine shaft same as
5.8L package. Cylinder identified by no groove on the outside diameter of the cylinder.
^ Large overdrive servo piston assembly (I.D. - B) same as 5.8L and 5.0L H.O.
^ Overdrive servo cover seal rings color coded green.
^ Governor assembly identified by .248 - .250 in. hole in center of primary valve (same as 5.8L).
AOD Design Changes Affecting All Passenger Car and Truck Applications
^ Torque specification changes affecting serviceability. (Use revised specifications for all past model AOD transmissions.)
- Inner Manual Lever: Was-30-40 ft.lbs. (41-54 N-m) Is-19-27 ft.lbs. (26-37 N-m)
- Stator support to pump body: Was-16-25 ft.lbs. (22-34 N-m) Is-12-16 ft.lbs. (16-22 N-m)
^ New oil pan fastener for improved torque retention. Bolt was 10 mm hex head M8-1.25 x 14; now 10 mm screw and washer assembly M8-1.25 x 15.5 Torque specification is 6-10 ft.lbs. with the new conical washer bolt (12-16 ft.lbs. with the original bolt).
^ Extension housing bolt head size commonized to 13 mm (was 10 mm). All AOD except 4x4 application.
^ Direct clutch piston return spring stiffened for a faster release of the direct clutch piston resulting in improved transmission durability.
