A/T - AOD Torque Converter Identification

TSB 86-66 (Dec)

Subject: FORD AOD

PROBLEM # 1 :
Torque Converter Identification

SOLUTION:
To help identify AOD converters, check the dimples on the side of the converter.

1. The 302 has slanted dimples as shown in figure 1. This the higher stall converter.

2. The 351 has straight dimples, as shown in figure 2. This is the lower stall converter

CAUTION
Be careful if using a 351 converter with a 302 engine. You may get a rough 2-3 upshift.

PROBLEM # 2 :
No 2-3 up-shift -- Remove pan -- pan very clean and oil OK.

1. Damper assembly in the torque converter broken or stripped.

TO CONFIRM THIS DIAGNOSIS:

Connect a pressure gauge to the direct clutch pressure tap (see figure 3). Accelerate vehicle to approximately 40 mph in the overdrive position on the selector (or above the speed where it would normally apply third gear).

If the gauge shows pressure, the transmission is probably capable of third gear, and the torque converter should be changed.

If the pressure gauge shows no direct clutch pressure, the problem is inside the transmission.
