AXLE - REAR - NEW AXLE SERVICE IDENTIFICATION TAG FOR ALL FORD DESIGN REAR AXLE

FORD 1985 FORD, T-BIRD, LTD, MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 MERCURY, COUGAR, MARQUIS, CAPRI, LINCOLN, CONTINENTAL, MARK VII

FIGURE 4:

FIGURE 5:

The use of axle Model Codes (Figure 4) as a means of axle identification when ordering axle service parts and/or assemblies will be discontinued. The Plant Code (Figure 5) is to be used as the official service identifier on all Ford design rear axles built beginning (approximately) October 1, 1984.

FIGURE 6:

The Plant Code for a particular axle assembly will not be duplicated. In addition, the Plant Code will not change as long as that particular axle assembly never undergoes an external design change. If, however, an internal design change takes place during the production life of the axle and that internal change affects service parts interchangeability, a dash and numerical suffix will be added to the Plant Code (Figure 6).

FIGURE 4:

FIGURE 5:

Note that Plant Codes in Figures 4 and 5 are identical except Figure 6 shows a numeric. This means that AS AN ASSEMBLY both axles are interchangeable; however, internally they are different. Therefore, each would require different internal service parts at service time.
Explanation of Plant Code Numbering System

Generally an "S" or "V" will precede each number series: "S" = Sterling Axle Plant, "V" = Van Dyke Axle Plant. The numbers following the "S" or "V" will generally designate a vehicle line. The alpha character following three numbers is for Plant use.

ALWAYS use the complete Plant Code when ordering service parts and/or assemblies.
