FIGURE 4:
A new steering gear mount design (Figure 4) was introduced on the 1985 Mark VII/Continental during the 1985 model year. The new design will also be incorporated as a running change, on the Thunderbird/ Cougar, LTD/Marquis, Mustang/Capri car lines.
For details on removal and installation, refer to the 1985 Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 13-46-8. Use the Mark VII/Continental procedure, skipping all steps for diesel operation.
NOTE: The most important change in service procedure is the new installation torque of 41-54 N-m (30-40 ft.lbs.).
Should the sleeve be damaged, it can be replaced. Remove the sleeve by collapsing it with a pair of visegrip (R) pliers and twisting and pulling. Install the new sleeve and draw it into position with the mounting bolt during gear installation.
