Heater - Floor Duct Air Distribution Imbalance

Article No. 85-20-3

HEATER - IMPROVED FLOOR DUCT AIR DISTRIBUTION FOR VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE JULY 1, 1985

FORD 1985 THUNDERBIRD, LTD, MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 COUGAR, MARQUIS, CAPRI

Heated air distribution through the two outlets for the right-hand portion of the floor duct may be inadequately balanced on vehicles built before July 1, 1985. As a result, the floor area forward of the front passenger seat may be receiving a heavier than necessary flow of air through the large outlet in the side of the duct and a passenger will experience excessive heat on one foot and not enough heat on the other.

Service Procedure

Figure 1 - SHEET METAL BAFFLE (ACTUAL SIZE):

1. Using the template provided in Figure 1, make a sheet metal baffle from stock on hand or obtained locally. Cut the baffle and bend it along the breaklines shown on the template.

2. Refer to Figure 2. Position the baffle, as shown in the illustration, so that a 1/2 inch area along the right side of the right side outlet in the duct is blocked.
3. Attach the baffle with pop rivets or screws.

4. Apply black tape over the baffle, as shown in Figure 2.
