WARNING: This modification is authorized only for the listed engines. Performing this modification on other engine calibrations is unauthorized and could create liability under applicable federal or local laws.
Spark knock may occur on some 2.3L EFI turbocharged engines. Installing a 3 Degree Retard Octane Rod will retard the initial timing from 10 degrees BTDC to 7 degrees BTDC. Follow the procedure for universal distributor Octane Rod removal and installation found in the 1985 Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Page 23-03-4.
NOTE: Before replacing the "Octane Adjustment Rod," check distributor "Stake Marks" for proper alignment. If distributor "Stake Marks" are aligned, check the timing before and after replacing the "Octane Adjustment Rod." Do not move the distributor to adjust timing.
Authorized Modifications decal:
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
