A/T - AOD Planetary Gear Set Deterioration

SUBJECT: FORD AOD

PROBLEM: Planet Tear-up

CAUSE: Early style pinion distortion (in some production)

CURE:
If the early style planet, direct drum, and hub are to be re-used, the planet must meet the following requirements:




a) The Torrington bearing in the bottom of the planet (Arrow # 1) must be free of defects. It must rotate smoothly when turned by hand.

b) The bushing shown, (Arrow # 2) should be replaced with a new one.

c) The pinions must all turn freely. One tight pinion is enough reason to junk the entire planet.

d) The pinion-to-carrier clearance must not exceed .025" (Arrow # 3).
