Instrument Panel - Removal/Installation Procedure

FORD 1985 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 COUGAR
The 1985 Car Shop Manual does not have instrument panel removal/installation instructions for the Thunderbird/ Cougar car lines. The following information is being published as a supplement to the 1985 Car Shop Manual, Section 45-61.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove the console panel (045A36), center R.H. I.P. finish panels (04302), Left Hand (045F49) and Right Hand finish panels (044B78), and I.P. cluster finish panel (044D70).
3. Remove and disconnect the following components:
Instrument cluster housing (10838), headlamp switch (11654), fog lamp switch (15A214), radio antenna switch (18863), electric clock (15000).
4. Remove and disconnect wiring assembly radio power booster and equalizer (18B864), radio, antenna and speaker (18805).
5. Remove the I.P. glove box compartment (06010). Remove and disconnect heater defroster control assembly (18548), warning indicator housing assembly (l0C876), radio receiver speaker assembly (18808).
6. Remove the I.P. steering column cover (04459), I.P. left sound insulator (046A25), parking brake release lever (02760) and steering column shroud (03530).
7. Disconnect the accessory feed wire assembly (14A318). Remove the I.P. A/C register (19632), slide aside the steering column tube assembly (03514) and remove cowl side panel (02038).
8. Remove and disconnect mouldings (31320), I.P. lower mounting bracket (044L33), I.P. to floor brace (04598). Disconnect the windshield washer pump (17664) and disconnect the main wiring harness (14401) and fuse holder assembly (14411).
9. Remove and disconnect heater blower motor feed wiring (18B574), heater switch to blower motor resistor assembly (18591), then remove instrument panel.
10. To install the instrument panel, reverse this procedure.
