IDLES TOO FAST - 3.8L CFI CORRODED CONNECTORS

STALLS AT IDLE - 3.8L CFI - CORRODED CONNECTORS

FORD 1984-85 LTD, THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 MARQUIS, COUGAR

CALIBRATIONS: All with EEC IV and air conditioning.

Engine rpm changes can be caused by electrical leakage at the EEC wire harness connectors. To service this condition, by-pass the leaky connectors by using the following procedure:

A gray 12-pin connector and a gray 6-pin connector are used to connect the 14401 to the 14290 wire harness. Road splash (a conductive solution) can cause electrical leakage at these connectors and allow false signals to reach the EEC processor. If electrical leakage occurs at the 12-pin connector, the ISC (Idle Speed Control)

ISC (idle Speed Control) motor can increase engine idle speed. If the leakage occurs at the 6-pin connector, the engine may stall because ISC motor allowed the engine to idle too slowly.

Figure 5:

1. The gray 6-pin connector is located near the left shock tower. (See Figure 5). Unlatch locking tabs and pull connector apart. Use appropriate tool to release A/C wire (black/yellow hash) from both connector shells.
2. Insert the female terminal of the A/C wire into a D4AZ-14489-H connector shell.

3. Insert the male terminal of the A/C wire into a D4AZ-14489-L connector shell.

NOTE: The 14489 connector shells are for two wires. To prevent an open circuit, be sure you select the mating wire locations in both shells.

4. Plug the new connector shells together and reconnect the 6-pin connector.

Figure 6:

5. The gray 12-pin connector is located under the washer bottle. (See Figure 6). Unlatch locking tabs and pull connector apart. Use appropriate tool to release the A/C wire (black/yellow hash) from both connector shells.
6. Insert the female terminal of the A/C wire into a D4AZ-14489-H connector shell.

7. Insert the male terminal of the A/C wire into a D4AZ-14489-L connector shell.

8. Plug the new connector shells together and reconnect the 12-pin connector.
