Front Fender Body Side Molding - Loose/Missing

Article No. 86-8-3

MOULDING LOOSE/MISSING - BODY SIDE PROTECTION - FRONT FENDER

FORD 1984-86 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-86 COUGAR

Figure 3:

Loose or missing front fender protection mouldings may be caused by mouldings lacking flexibility and proper adhesion to conform to sheet metal contour. To correct this condition, a newly designed moulding with attaching studs is available to replace the existing front fender moulding. To install, the front fender will have to be drilled in two (2) locations to accommodate the studs. Closely follow the installation instructions and Figure 3 for the best results.

1. Obtain all parts required.

2. Remove both the existing front fender mouldings (if any) and discard.

3. Place template where the old moulding was and tape in place.

4. Prick punch the front fender where the center of the holes line up on the template (two holes per side).

5. Remove the template from vehicle and save for future repairs.

6. Use a 9.0 mm (23/64") drill bit and drill a clearance hole in the front fender at the previously punched holes.

Figure 3:

7. Use appropriate file and create an elongated hole (12.0 mm (O.472") long), as shown in Figure 3.

8. Clean metal burrs off the newly drilled holes.

9. Clean any excess adhesive or dirt (around the moulding area) with isopropyl alcohol.

NOTE: Make sure the surface is perfectly clean and dry. Work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or flame.

10. Touch-up holes with appropriate Ford paint and allow paint to dry.

11 Apply Super Seal around the edge of drilled holes.

12. Check alignment of the new moulding before attaching with stud nuts or removing protective paper coating from adhesive strips.

13. Peel off the protective backing paper from the new moulding and heat the moulding to 70~ - 110~ F (21~ - 43~C) (E6SZ-16C068). Do not touch the exposed tape surface.

14. If necessary, heat the sheet metal on the front fender (using heat lamp) to 70~ - 110~F (21~ - 43~C) +/- 10~F (heat only the area where the new moulding is attached).

15. Align studs in new moulding with previously drilled holes and attach moulding. Press moulding firmly to body, making sure there are no air pockets between the moulding and the body surface.

16. Use (N620371-S36) nut on studs and secure (two per side) and tighten to 2.7-4.0 N-m (2-3 ft.lbs.).

17. Repeat steps for the other side of the vehicle.
