Front Seat Trim Cover - Loose and/or Baggy

SEAT - CUSHION - FRONT - TRIM

COVER - LOOSE AND/OR BAGGY

FORD 1985 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 TOPAZ


Some early 1985 Production vehicles (built August 27, 1984 through September 30, 1984) without sport seats may exhibit loose and/or baggy front seat cushion trim covers. To service, a cushion pad protector and cushion pad support may be installed, using the following procedure and illustrations.
1. Obtain the following parts:

2. Remove the driver and passenger seats from the vehicle as outlined in the appropriate section of the 1985 Car Shop Manual as indicated below:
^ Seats equipped with manual seat tracks Section 41-01.
^ Seats equipped with power seat tracks Section 41-08.

3. Position the driver's seat and track assembly on a clean protected work surface as shown in Figure 1.

4. Remove the plastic "J" retainer used to secure the rear portion of the cushion trim cover to the seat cushion frame (refer to Figure 2).

NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the seat tracks from the seat cushion.

5. Install the cushion pad shield to the metal flange at the rear of the cushion frame as shown in Figure 2.

6. Install one end of the front seat cushion support assembly to the pad support assembly and the other end of the cushion support assembly to the cushion frame as shown in Figure 3.

7. Position the seat cushion pad support to the seat cushion frame, then install the cushion trim cover (refer to Figure 4).
NOTE: The trim cover's "J" retainer is installed over the cushion support "J" retainer.

8. Repeat steps three (3) through seven (7) on the passenger's seat.

9. If the seats are equipped with an inertia seat back latch, check the latch for proper operation (sensitivity test) before installing the seats in the vehicle as follows:

^ With the seat and track assembly positioned on a flat surface, grasp the seat cushion only and slowly tilt the seat assembly forward enough to cause the seat to tilt forward (via gravity).

^ The latch should engage at this point (11 degrees from original position) restricting the seat back from tilting to its full forward position. If it does not lock, replace it.
10. Install the driver and passenger seats in the vehicle using the previously removed screws and/or nut and washer assemblies. Refer to Group 41 of the appropriate 1985 Car Shop Manual as indicated:
^ Seats with manual tracks - 41-01.
^ Seats with power tracks - 41-08.

NOTE: Be sure to torque all attachments to specification.
11. Check the seat tracks and seat belts for proper operation.

1. WITH THE HOOK PORTION OF THE CUSHION SUPPORT "J" RETAINER FACING UP, INSERT THE RETAINER BETWEEN THE NO. 3 AND NO. 4 PAD SUPPORT WIRES.
2. WORK THE RETAINER REARWARD BETWEEN THE PAD SUPPORT WIRES AND THE CUSHION PAD UNTIL THE RETAINER CAN BE PULLED OUT AT THE REAR OF THE CUSHION.
3. AT THE N0.3 PAD SUPPORT WIRE INSTALL THE "J" RETAINER.
4. AT THE REAR OF THE SEAT CUSHION INSTALL THE "J" RETAINER ON THE METAL FLANGE OF THE CUSHION FRAME.
