SPEED CONTROL - 2.3L OHC AND 2.3L HSC - INOPERATIVE OR DELAYED RESPONSE TIME

This article is being republished to expand the applicable model year to cover 1985 vehicles.

ISSUE: Inoperative speed control or speed control with delayed response time in cold ambient temperatures may be caused by moisture produced by the engine getting into the vehicle vacuum system and entering the speed control servo. The moisture may freeze or produce corrosion build-up in the speed control servo.

ACTION: To correct this, install a new speed control servo and vacuum check valve. The vacuum check valve will prevent moisture from entering the speed control servo. Refer to the following service procedure.

1. Remove the speed control servo.

2. Dry out all speed control servo vacuum source hoses.

3. Install a new speed control servo, E4LY-9C735-A for Mustang/Capri or E2FZ-9C735-A for Tempo/Topaz.

CAUTION: INSTALL VACUUM CHECK VALVE WITH END LABELED "VAC" TOWARDS THE VACUUM SOURCE.

4. Install the inline vacuum check valve as follows:

a. Mustang/Capri

Remove the connector at the end of the extension hose and install the vacuum check valve, (E3ZZ-9C793-B). The extension hose connects the speed control servo vacuum hose to the vacuum outlet manifold.

NOTE: VEHICLES NOT EQUIPPED WITH AN EXTENSION HOSE MUST HAVE THE SERVO VACUUM HOSE CUT THREE (3) INCHES FROM THE VACUUM OUTLET MANIFOLD. AFTER THE HOSE IS CUT, INSTALL THE VACUUM CHECKVALVE IN-BETWEEN THE CUT HOSE.

b. Tempo/Topaz

Cut the speed control servo vacuum source hose four (4) inches from the speed control servo. Install the vacuum check valve, (E3ZZ-9C793-B) in-between the cut hose.
