Unit Overhaul/Fuel Charging Assembly

Escort, Lynx, EXP, Tempo, Topaz, Sable & Taurus

To prevent damage to the throttle plates, the fuel charging assembly should be positioned on a suitable stand or pad.

Disassembly
1. Invert fuel charging assembly and remove four throttle body-to-main body attaching screws, Fig. 16.
2. Separate throttle body from main body, then remove and discard gasket.
3. Carefully remove four fuel pressure regulator attaching screws. Fuel pressure regulator cover is spring loaded. Apply downward pressure to regulator when removing attaching screws to prevent personal injury.
4. Remove cover assembly, cup, spring and diaphragm.
5. Remove regulator valve seat, then the fuel injector retaining screw and retainer.
6. Remove injector assembly and O-ring.
7. Remove fuel fittings and filter screen from fuel inlet channel.
8. Remove TPS attaching screws and the TPS from throttle body.
9. Remove ISC motor and bracket assembly from throttle body. Remove ISC motor from bracket, if necessary.



Assembly
1. If previously removed, attach ISC motor to bracket and torque retaining screws to 44---50 inch lbs.
2. Install ISC motor and bracket assembly to throttle body. Torque retaining screws to 38---44 inch lbs.
3. Position TPS with connector toward main body. Rotate sensor counterclockwise to align screw holes, then install retaining screws and torque to 14---16 ft. lbs. To ensure correct idle speeds, the TPS must be turned counterclockwise only when installing.
4. Position new gasket on main body, then mount throttle body on main body. Install retaining screws and torque to 38---44 inch lbs.
5. Lubricate new lower O-ring and injector seat with clean engine oil, then position the O-ring on injector.
6. Lubricate upper O-ring, then clean and lubricate throttle body O-ring seat.
7. Center injector and apply a steady downward pressure with a slight rotational force to install injector. Install injector retainer and screw and torque screw to 18---22 inch lbs.
8. Install fuel pressure regulator valve seat, diaphragm, spring and spring cup cover.
9. Apply downward pressure to cover and install four retaining screws. Torque screws to 28---32 inch lbs.
10. Clean and install fuel filter screen in fuel inlet channel.
11. Remove any debris from fuel fittings and apply suitable locking compound to the fittings.
12. Install fuel fittings and torque to 14---17 ft. lbs.
