LATCH - CHILD SAFETY REAR DOORS

FORD 1985 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 TOPAZ

Figure 2:

A new feature rear door "Child Safety Lock" has been designed for incorporation in the 1985 Tempo/Topaz. This feature when activated prevents the rear door from being opened from inside the vehicle regardless of the position of the night lock knob. The "Child Safety Lock" has been designed into the door latch bellcrank levers and a decal has been located on the rear door lock face to indicate the location of the lever which is manually moved up to lock and down to unlock the system (Figure 2). Once the system is put into the locked position and the door is closed, the door can only be opened from outside the vehicle. The "Child Safety Lock" does not lock the door from the outside; it is still necessary to push the night lock knob down to lock the door from outside.
Dealer technicians involved with installing a "Child Lock" during service must make certain that the child lock black lever is wiped free of grease, and that it is carefully placed in the sheet metal slot of the door lock face prior to tightening the three latch retaining screws, otherwise, removal/installation instructions are the same as outlined in the 1985 Car Shop Manual, Section 44-06.
