PLEASE CIRCULATE THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO YOUR PARTS AND SERVICE PERSONNEL. ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THESE INSTRUCTIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO YOUR SERVICE ZONE MANAGER.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

General Services Administration fleet 1985 Tempo and Topaz vehicles manufactured at the Kansas City Assembly Plant from January 7, 1985 through March 8, 1985. Vehicles involved in this program are equipped with a driver side air bag restraint system.

PROGRAM FEATURES

Component Covered: ^ Air bag system wiring harness

Repair Coverage: ^ Ford will pay the repair costs (parts and labor) of repairs to the air bag wiring harness due to corrosion of the wiring at splices near the forward sensors.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

Vehicles having production dates of March 9, 1985, or after do not need to have this service performed.

1. Disconnect and remove battery.

2. Remove air cleaner inlet tube adapter and tube from front fender apron (driver's side).

3. Locate the center crash sensor (mounted to radiator support, near hood latch) and disconnect the wiring assembly from the sensor connector (see Figure 1).

NOTE: CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO AVOID BREAKING CONNECTOR'S LOCKING FINGERS DURING REMOVAL.

4. Measure approximately 8 inches from the wiring connector and remove the bundling tape from the harness.

5. Remove the tape from the four splice joints and inspect splice for corrosion. If corrosion is not present, retape the splice joint properly with electrical tape (C8AZ-19628-D) and proceed to step 6

If corrosion is present, remove the corroded portion of wire and perform the following steps:

Strip and splice both ends of the wire requiring repair with the correct waterproof butt splice connector. (See Article 86-3-11 attached)
Note: Be sure all wires are correctly matched according to their respective color codes.

6. Cut four - 6 inch long pieces of a length of shield on each of the four wires. See Figure 2.

7. Apply a strip of electrical tape (C8AZ-19628-D) to the center of each newly installed wiring shield as shown in Figure 2.

8. Tape both ends of the bundle with electrical tape as shown in Figure 2.

9. Using pressure sensitive waterproof tape (D6AZ-19627-A), wrap the bundle completely as shown in Figure 2.
10. Connect the wiring assembly to the center crash sensor connector.

11. Install the air cleaner inlet tube adapter and tube to the front fender apron.

12. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

13. To gain access to the side crash sensor wiring, remove the push pin and screw retaining the front fender splash shield to the fender and position the splash shield out of the way.

14. Remove the retainer securing the wiring assembly to the fender apron and disconnect the wiring assembly from the crash sensor connector.

NOTE: CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO AVOID BREAKING WIRING CONNECTORS/RETAINERS DURING REMOVAL.

FIGURE 3:

15. Route the disconnected wiring assembly between the "GOP" and front bumper extension (see Figure 3).
16. Remove the tape from one of the two splice joints and inspect for corrosion. If corrosion is not present, retape the splice joint properly with electrical tape (C8AZ-19628-D) and proceed to Step 17.

If corrosion is present, follow step 5. above.

Note: Be sure all wires are correctly matched to their respective color codes.

FIGURE 2:

17. Cut two - 6 inch long pieces of wiring shield (D4FZ-14A099-B) and install a length of shield on each of the wires (see Figure 2).

18. Apply a strip of electrical tape (C8AZ-19628-D) to the center of both newly installed wiring shields.

FIGURE 3:

19. Tape both ends of the bundle with electrical tape as shown in Figure 3.

FIGURE 2:

20. Using pressure sensitive waterproof tape (D6AZ-19627-A), wrap the bundle completely as shown in Figure 2.
21. Reroute the wiring assembly between the "GOP" and front bumper extension and secure the assembly to the fender apron. Connect the wiring assembly to the crash sensor connector.

22. Position the splash shield to the fender and secure with the push pin and screw.

23. Repeat steps 13 through 22 for the opposite side crash sensor wiring repair.

24. Lower the vehicle.

25. Install and connect the battery.

26. Test air bag system for proper operation by turning the ignition switch to RUN and observe the air bag readiness indicator lamp. If the lamp comes on continuously for 4 to 8 seconds and then goes out, the system is functioning properly.
