Engine: Service and Repair


Engine and transaxle are removed as an assembly.
1. Mark position of hood hinges, then remove hood.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove lower radiator hose and drain coolant from engine. Remove upper radiator hose from engine.
4. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle cooler lines from rubber hoses below radiator.
5. Remove coil assembly from cylinder head. Disconnect coolant fan electrical connector.
6. Remove radiator shroud, cooling fan and radiator.
7. Carefully discharge refrigerant from air conditioning system, if equipped. Remove inlet and outlet lines from compressor.
8. Mark and disconnect all electrical and vacuum lines from engine.
9. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect TV linkage from transaxle. On models equipped with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch cable from transaxle shift lever.
10. Disconnect accelerator linkage, fuel supply and return lines from engine.
11. Disconnect thermactor pump discharge hose from pump.
12. Disconnect power steering pressure and return lines from pump, if equipped. Remove power steering line bracket from cylinder head.
13. Install engine support tool No. D79P-6000-A or equivalent, to engine lifting eye.
14. Raise and support vehicle.
15. Remove starter cable from starter.
16. Remove air hose from catalytic converter.
17. Remove bolt securing exhaust pipe bracket to oil pan. Remove two exhaust pipes to exhaust manifold nuts, then pull exhaust pipe out of rubber insulating grommets and position aside.
18. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
19. Remove water pump inlet hose from engine.
20. Remove bolts securing control arms to body. Remove stabilizer bar bracket bolts and brackets.
21. Remove half shaft assembly from transaxle.
22. On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove roll restrictor nuts from transaxle. Remove shift stabilizer bar to transaxle bolts. Remove shift mechanism to shift shaft nut and bolt from transaxle.
23. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect manual shift cable clip from transaxle shift lever. Remove manual shift linkage bracket bolts and bracket from transaxle.
24. Remove nuts and lefthand rear No. 4 insulator mount bracket from body bracket.
25. Lower vehicle and install suitable lifting hoist to engine. Do not allow front wheels to touch floor.
26. Remove engine support tool No. D79L-6000-A or equivalent from engine.
27. Remove righthand No. 3 insulator intermediate bracket to engine bracket bolts and intermediate bracket to insulator nuts. Remove nut on the bottom of double ended stud which secures intermediate bracket to engine bracket. Remove bracket.
28. Carefully lower engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
29. Reverse procedure to install. When installing engine/transaxle assembly, position assembly directly below engine compartment. Slowly lower vehicle over engine and transaxle. Do not allow front wheels to contact floor.
