Adaptive Strategy

*** UPDATED BY TSB#84-19-13

Engine electronics (EEC lV) on 1985 models have a new design called " Adaptive Strategy ". The purpose of "Adaptive Strategy" is to continually adjust the engine calibration to correct for variation of EEC lV components. A short adjustment of learning period will occur.

1. On new vehicles.
2. When the battery has been disconnected during normal service.
3. When an EEC component is disconnected or replaced.

During the adjustment or learning period (usually under 5 miles of driving) some vehicles could exhibit abnormal drive symptoms (surge, hesitation, high idle speeds). For new vehicles, the learning process will probably be complete by the time the vehicle has been delivered to your dealership. If drive symptoms occur on the subject vehicles at predelivery, after the battery has been disconnected or after EEC component servicing, the EEC lV memory can be adjusted by performing the following routine.

1. Disconnect the vehicle negative battery cable for 5 to 10 minutes.
2. Reconnect the battery cable and bring the engine to normal operating temperture and verify the original concern has been corrected.

NOTE: On all 2.3L HSC CFI vehicles, the following procedure must be performed and may be required on the other subject vehicles if drive symptoms persist.

3. With all accessories off, idle the engine as follows:

2 minutes in Neutral (vehicles with manual transmission only)(AC off if so equipped).

2 minutes in Drive (vehicles with automatic transmissions only)(AC off if so equipped).
OR
2 minutes in Drive with AC on (if so equipped).

4. Drive the vehicle for 5 minutes through a Stop and Go normal city drive cycle.

Calibration Application Chart:

High idle speed, stalling or other driveability symptoms may still be present after a defective component has been replaced. This may mean that the adaptive Strategy must be reset in the EEC-IV processor. The procedure to reset Adaptive Idle Speed Control is as follows:
1. Disconnect battery for 10-15 minutes.
2. Reconnect battery, start engine and bring to normal operating temperature (upper radiator hose hot and pressurized).
3. Set parking brake and place foot on service brake.
4. Place transmission in Drive (ATX) or Neutral (MTX), steering in the "straight ahead" position.
5. Place all accessories in the Off position. A/C Off and the mode selector lever, located on A/C panel, set in the "floor" position.
6. When the engine RPM reaches the Adaptive Idle Speed (refer to the following application chart), let the engine idle for 2 minutes.
NOTE:The vehicle can be driven to check for customer concerns. This will start the learning process for Adaptive Fuel Control.
