STALL - DRIVE ENGAGEMENT AND DECEL - 2.3L HSC CFI
FORD 1985 TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 TOPAZ
CALIBRATIONS: 5-26E-R0, -R10; 5-26R-R01, -R11
WARNING: This modification is authorized only for the listed engines. Performing this modification on other engine calibrations is unauthorized and could create liability under applicable federal or local laws.
Vehicles which stall during transmission engagement (Drive or Reverse) following the initial cold start, or on a deceleration to stop may be corrected with a new processor. The condition should be serviced using the following procedure.
NOTE: The processor listed below may reduce, in frequency, power steering/turning maneuver stalls, but may not totally eliminate this condition.
1. Replace the existing processor with new processor E63F-12A650-TE (49 State), or E63F-12A650-UE (California).
2. Reset the throttle body hardstop (anti-diesel stop) to 625 (+/-25) RPM.
NOTE: Do not set the hardstop above 625 RPM or it may adversely affect the Adaptive Idle Speed Control learning.
3. Idle the vehicle for 2 minutes with the engine at operating temperatures, with the transmission in gear and the foot and parking brakes engaged. This is to reset the Adaptive Idle Speed Control.
NOTE: The new processor has a new RPM specification for the Adaptive Learned Idle Speed. The new specification is approximately 650 RPM in Drive.
4. Adjust the TV linkage using the procedures found in TSB 85-9-29.
5. Perform Quick Test to ensure the system is operating properly.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The new processor is a 1986 level processor and 1986 EEC IV Diagnostic Procedures for 2.3L HSC Base must be used. Also, if a Code 53 shows in the continuous (memory) test of the key-on, engine-off self-test, it should be ignored.
Authorized Modifications Decal:
6. Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
