PERFORMANCE POOR - 2.3L HSC WITH HOLLEY CARBURETOR - MODEL 6149 OR 1946

FORD 1984-85 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 TOPAZ

CALIBRATIONS: 4-25A, D, E, F, G; 4-26D, E, J, K, S and 5-25G; 5-26G (1985 Canadian)

Poor performance may be caused by black "rubber-like" particles lodged in the high speed air bleed, main and/or idle circuits of the carburetor. Any of these conditions will result in an incorrect fuel/air ratio. The particles can come from the air cleaner outlet tube and are left over from the manufacturing process. The condition can be serviced by cleaning the carburetor as follows:

Figure 7 - AIR CLEANER OUTLET TUBE:

1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (Figure 7).

2. Thoroughly clean the inside of the air cleaner outlet tube. Use soap and water and wipe out with a clean rag.
3. Remove the carburetor from the vehicle.

4. Dismantle the main body and airhorn from the carburetor assembly.

NOTE: For disassembly and assembly procedures, refer to Shop Manual, Volume E, Section 24-15.

5. Remove the main jet.

6. Using shop air, thoroughly blow all particles out of the high speed bleed in the airhorn. Also, thoroughly blow out all idle system and main system passages.

7. Reassemble the carburetor using the correct gasket kit. (identify gasket kit in parts catalog using carburetor I.D. tag.)

8. Reassemble all components to the vehicle.
