Starter - Remains Energized With Engine Running

The vehicles listed above and built prior to March 1, 1985, have a D8DZ-11450-B Starter Relay (supplied by Essex). The internal contact design of this relay is susceptible to sticking, when installed on the subject vehicles with electronic engine controls that have an external diode connection to ground in the wiring harness. The combination of the Essex contact design with the external diode may cause the relay contacts to eventually stick (during cranking cycle) and therefore the starter remains engaged with the engine running. This can be corrected by installing a new relay of a different design.

1. The original D8DZ-11450-B relay should be replaced by an E5TZ-11450-A relay. Refer to Figure 8 for the external physical differences of the two relays, for easy identification.

2. Remove the diode/resistor assembly. The diode/ resistor assembly is molded in rubber and taped into the -14290- wiring harness near the starter relay. Cut the black wire going to this assembly (See Figure 9) and tape the black wire back onto the wiring harness using electrical tape.
NOTE: Some vehicles may already have the diode/ resistor assembly removed at the assembly plant. It is therefore recommended that the technician inspect the wiring harness to determine if the rework has been previously performed.
