Steering Wheel Damper - Steering Column Shake
Article No. 85-9-15IDLE - ROUGH - 2.3L HSC WITH ATX TRANSAXLE
FORD 1985 TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985 TOPAZ
Rough idle (steering column shake) may be caused by use of an incorrect steering wheel damper. Vehicles can be inspected and serviced in the following manner:
1. Remove and retain the two screws that attach the steering wheel hub cover to the steering wheel spoke. Lift the outside edges of the cover to remove. Do not pry with a sharp instrument.
2. Inspect the existing steering wheel damper. If a dab of yellow paint is present, the damper is OK. In these instances, simply reinstall the steering wheel hub cover. If the damper has no paint, or a dab of green paint, proceed to Step 3.
3. Remove and retain the steering wheel attaching nut.
4. Remove the existing steering wheel damper and install the replacement damper (service part number E53Z-3F690-A) which has a dab of yellow paint on the face.
5. Reinstall the steering wheel attaching nut. Torque the nut to 30 to 40 ft.lbs. (40 to 57 Nm).
6. Reinstall the steering wheel hub cover to the steering wheel spoke. Use the two attaching screws previously removed.
