Seat Back - (Passenger Front) Movement When Braking

SEAT - PASSENGER FRONT - SEAT BACK MOVEMENT WHEN BRAKING

FORD 1983-86 MUSTANG, THUNDERBIRD; 1984-85 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-86 CAPRI, COUGAR; 1984-85 TOPAZ, MARK VII

Front seat back movement while braking is due to the use of an inertia seat back latch which allows forward movement of the seat back before lock-up. This condition can be corrected by replacing the inertia latch with a new toggle spring latch.

1. Obtain the appropriate toggle spring latch and upper and lower covers. Refer to the Parts Required List.

2. Remove the seat and track assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Section 41-01 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.

3. Remove the lower latch cover from the seat assembly and save the attaching screws.

4. Remove the seat back from the seat assembly. Save the attaching screws. Refer to Section 41-30 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.

5. Raise the seat back cover half way up the seat back as shown in Figure 1. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 41-30.

6. Remove the upper latch cover from the seat back frame and save the attaching screws.

7. Remove the inertia latch and save the attaching screws.

8. Attach the new toggle spring latch to the seat back frame and tighten screws to 19-27 N-m (14-19 ft.lbs.).

9. Attach the appropriate new upper latch cover to the seat back frame.

10. Pull the cover down and hog ring cover to the seat back frame. Refer to Section 41-30 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.

11. Secure seat back to the seat cushion. Tighten screws to 30-43 N-m (22-32 ft.lbs.) Refer to Section 41-30 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.

12. Attach the appropriate new lower latch cover. Paint to match interior color.

13. Perform the latch functional and sensitivity test called out in Section 41-30 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.

14. Secure the seat and track assembly in the vehicle. Refer to Section 41-01 of the appropriate Car Shop Manual.
