A steel, rubber coated, oil filter adapter gasket (6840) was used on 3.8L engines built after March 4, 1986 and is not interchangeable with the paper gasket previously used. The new gasket is thicker than the paper gasket and the front cover has been modified for its use.

If the new gasket is used on the old front cover assembly, loss of oil pressure will occur because of excessive clearance. If the old gasket is used on the new cover, there may be interference between the oil pump gears and the pump housing.
