FORD 1986 LTD, THUNDERBIRD, MUSTANG
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 MARQUIS, COUGAR, CAPRI
Drive belt noise on 1986 vehicles equipped with a 3.8L engine may be caused by improper belt tension or belt alignment with the drive pulleys. The belt should not rub against the front or rear flange of the idler pulley. Incorrect position of the power steering pump pulley or other drive components having brackets misaligned, can cause pulley/belt misalignment. The subject vehicles having this condition can be serviced using the following procedure.
1. Check the drive belt/pulley system for obvious pulley interference, belt tension, component worn condition or misassembly. Service as required.
2. Install a power steering pulley pusher/puller tool or equivalent on the pump pulley as outlined in the 1986 Car Shop Manual, Volume B, Section 13-51- 3 and adjust the pulley press in the direction that minimizes or eliminates the belt noise. The drive belt should not rub against the idler pulley flanges. Do not exceed the pulley press range specification of .015" to .035" which is measured from the end of the pump shaft.
3. Remove the tool, start the engine and check the noise level. It may be necessary to make more than one adjustment to minimize or eliminate the noise.
4. If noise still persists - sight the alignment of the air pump to the idler pulley. If pulleys are misaligned to each other, replace the air pump and the idler pulley brackets.
5. Mustang/Capri, Thunderbird/Cougar only - replace the A/C compressor bracket.
6. Using Belt Tension Gauge T63L-8620-A, adjust the drive belt tension to 130-160 lbs. using the procedure outlined in the 1986 Car Shop Manual, Section 27-02-5. Move the hold-down bolts in the lower threaded holes in the fixed rear plate if insufficient travel is evident to achieve proper belt tension. Tighten the two hold-down bolts to 30-40 ft.lbs.
