WARNING: This modification is authorized only for the listed engines. Performing this modification on other engine calibrations is unauthorized and could create liability under applicable federal or local laws.
Engine stumbling, poor acceleration and/or stalling at idle may be caused by carburetor icing. This can occur at ambient temperatures between 30~F and 40~F (-1~C and 5~C) with high humidity. To correct this, a new design heated carburetor spacer kit should be installed.
2.8L Installation Procedure
1. Remove the carburetor and carburetor-to-intake manifold spacer.
2. Install the heated carburetor spacer, -9A589-, supplied in the kit.
3. Reinstall the carburetor.
Figure 19:
4. Install the -9P664- wiring harness supplied in the kit (see Figure 19).
a. Attach connector A to the starter motor solenoid on the battery (power) side.
b. Attach connector B to any convenient ground. If necessary, attach the connector to the body sheet metal with a metal screw, N801846- S36MG, supplied in the kit.
c. Install the relay, -9345-, supplied in the kit to connector C. Attach the relay to any convenient accessible point on the body sheet metal with metal screws, N801846-S36MG, supplied in the kit.
d. Disconnect the existing wiring from the bowl vent solenoid.
e. Remove connector D from the wire terminal in wiring harness -9P664- and install the connector -14A459- supplied in the kit. Remove connector E from the wire terminal in the wiring harness -9P664- and install the connector -14489- supplied in the kit.
f. Attach connector D to the bowl vent solenoid.
g. Connect the existing wiring disconnected in Step 4d. to connector E.
h. Attach connector F to the heated carburetor spacer, -9A589-.
i. Secure the wiring to support points using bundling straps, 95873-S.
j. With a volt-ohmmeter, Rotunda Model 007- 00001, check wiring harness installation:
^ With ignition Off, there should be no power at connector F.
^ With the engine On, voltage at connector F should be within 1/2 volt of battery voltage.
3.8L Installation Procedure
1. Remove the carburetor and carburetor-to-intake manifold spacer.
2. Install the heated carburetor spacer, -9A589-, supplied in the kit.
3. Reinstall the carburetor.

d. Disconnect the existing wiring from the throttle kicker solenoid, 3.8L non-A/C only.
e. Attach connector D to the throttle kicker solenoid, 3.8L non-A/C only.
f. Attach the 29 inch (750 mm) jumper wire, - 9P664-, supplied in the kit to connector D, 3.8L with A/C.
Splice the 29 inch (750 mm) jumper wire into the 640 wire circuit (red with yellow stripe or yellow hash line) in the main wiring harness near the left shock tower, 3.8L with A/C.
g. Connect the existing wiring disconnected in Step 4d. to connector E, 3.8L non-A/C only.
h. Tape over connector E (not required with 3.8L with A/C).
i. Attach connector F to the heated carburetor spacer, -9A589-.
j. Secure the wiring to support points using bundling straps, 95873-S.
k. With a volt-ohmmeter check harness installation:
^ With the ignition Off, there should be no power at connector F.
^ With the engine On, voltage at connector F should be within 1/2 volt of battery voltage.
