Loose or broken shift lever extension to transmission stub shaft bolts may be caused by the metal sleeve spacer in the shift lever being crushed during torquing of the bolts. The crushed spacer prevents the bolts from achieving proper clamp loads and setting of the adhesive on the threads.

In these cases, the following service should be performed. Refer to Figure 24.
^ Remove the shift lever extension from the transmission stub shaft as outlined in the appropriate 1985-86 Car Shop Manual, Powertrain, Volume D.
^ Replace with a new shift lever extension assembly, part number E6ZZ-7210-A Mustang/Capri, or E6SZ-7210-A Thunderbird/Cougar, and new bolts, part number N803948-S100.
