ISSUE: Rear brake shudder and/or vibration may be caused by excessive axle shaft brake drum/rotor pilot runout and/or axle shaft flange face runout. This may be experienced during moderate braking action.

ACTION: To correct this, first check for the condition by lightly applying the parking brake on the vehicle at a slow vehicle speed (10-20 mph/16-32 km/h). If the condition is present, refer to the Car Shop Manual, Section 12 for brake system diagnosis. If after completion of the brake diagnosis checks, the condition is still present, check/replace the axle shaft(s) using the following service procedure.

1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies.

2. Remove the push-on brake drum nuts and discard.

NOTE: Push-on brake drum nuts are used for shipping purposes only and do not require replacement.

3. Remove brake drums/rotors.

NOTE: If vehicle is equipped with rear disc brakes, see Section 12-25 of the appropriate model year Car Shop Manual for rotor removal.

4. Mount a dial indicator, Rotunda tool - 4201-C, as shown in Figure 5.

5. With drum or rotor removed, check drum/rotor pilot radial runout. If runout exceeds .007 inch, replace axle shaft.

Figure 6:

6. Reposition dial indicator as shown in Figure 6.

7. Check axle shaft flange face lateral runout. If runout exceeds .010 inch, replace axle shaft.

NOTE: Refer to the axle shaft application chart below for correct service part application.
