NOISE - CLUNK/POP IN FRONT END ON TURNS WITH BRAKES APPLIED

FORD 1984-85 THUNDERBIRD, LTD, MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984-85 COUGAR, MARQUIS, CAPRI

This article outlines the procedure to service vehicles which may exhibit a clunk/pop noise in the front end when turning with the brakes applied. This procedure is to be performed on both right and left sides of the vehicle. This condition does not affect vehicle handling.

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

3. Check the two lower suspension arm inner pivot nuts and bolts for proper torque. If loose, torque to 190-203 N-m (140-150 ft.lbs.).

4. Check the two nuts and bolts that attach the strut to the spindle for proper torque. If loose, torque to 230-244 N-m (170-180 ft.lbs.).

5. Remove the two caliper locating pins and lubricate with D7AZ-19590-A or D7AZ-19A331-A on the pin surface where the outer brake shoe slides (Figure 14). Care should be taken so that the lubricant does not get on the brake linings, the rotor braking surface, or the pin threads.

6. Install the two caliper locating pins and torque to 64 N-m (50 ft.lbs.).

7. Install the wheel and tire assembly.

8. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.

9. Prior to moving the vehicle, the brake pedal should be depressed several times to position the brake shoes.
