Lean stumble, hesitation on driveaway, and multiple cold starts can be caused by deposits on the metering surfaces of the injector pintle, reducing fuel flow. Vehicles that are used to make numerous short trips, particularly during hot weather, are most susceptible to drive concerns caused by injector tip deposits. A major causal factor may be continuous use of gasolines that do not contain sufficient detergent additives.
If a drive concern is determined to be caused by lean injectors due to deposit formation, the customer should be informed that poor fuel quality contributes to the formation of these deposits. The use of high quality gasolines which contain detergent additives to reduce or eliminate the formation of such deposits should be recommended. Elimination of these deposits may require two or more tanks full of a fuel with added detergents. Injector tip deposits will not form if good quality gasoline with proper additives is used.
Gasoline brands that are advertised as able to "keep injectors clean" or "clean up injectors" contain these necessary additives and are recommended by Ford Motor Company.
A new tool (Rotunda 113-00001) is now available to test and clean injectors. This cleaner/tester will identify rich, plugged or otherwise defective injectors (to allow replacement of faulty injector when required) or will indicate that all injectors are functioning correctly thus eliminating injectors as the cause of a concern. This tester/cleaner will also reduce the time required to diagnose lean injector conditions. The unit can then be used to clean the injector and retest to assure that the problem has been correctly diagnosed and fixed.
Copies of an information leaflet have been sent to all dealers by separate mailing. A copy of this leaflet should be placed in the vehicle or given to each customer who has a drive concern caused by a plugged injector.
