LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985-86 COUGAR

A raspy sound coming from the transmission while operating the vehicle in 5th gear at highway speeds may be caused by the 2nd gear snap ring making contact with the oil slots of the 3rd gear bearing bore. This can be corrected by installing a new 2nd gear snap ring using the following procedure.

1. Using 1985-86 Car Shop Manual, Volume D, Section 16-32, remove the transmission from the vehicle and disassemble the transmission, removing the output shaft assembly from the transmission case assembly.

2. Disassemble the output shaft to the point of access to the 2nd gear retaining snap ring; remove the snap ring and discard.

3. Install new 2nd gear snap ring, E6ZZ-7064-A (caution must be used not to stretch or distort the snap ring during assembly). Reinstall spacer, 3rd gear needle bearing assembly and 3rd gear. Rotate by hand to assure that it turns freely without contacting the snap ring. Reassemble output shaft.

4. Install output shaft assembly and complete reassembly per Shop Manual procedure.

5. Install transmission and road test.
