Electronic Odometer - Erratic Operation or Inoperative

The electronic display odometer may not register mileage or may lose some display mileage when the ignition is turned off. This may be caused by crossed circuits in the 14401 wiring connector for the odometer module. Depending on the type of vehicle, use one of the following procedures to diagnose and correct this concern.

INSPECTION/REPAIR PROCEDURE
Thunderbird/Cougar (Refer to Figure 3)
1. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to module connector. See Section 33-05 of the 1986 Car Shop Manual for removal instructions.
2. Disconnect the 18-way brown connector from module and check terminals No. 16 and No. 17. No. 16 should be light blue/pink (circuit No. 295) and No. 17 should be light green/yellow (circuit No. 54). If the circuits are not as indicated, reverse the wires. If circuits are correct, perform normal diagnostic procedures outlined in the 1986 Car Shop Manual (33-09-3).

1. Remove instrument cluster to gain access to module connector, See Section 17-02 of the 1986 Aerostar Shop Manual for removal instructions.
2. Disconnect the 14-way gray connector from module and check terminals No. 12 and No. 13. No. 12 should be pink/black (circuit No. 489) and No. 13 should be light green/yellow (circuit No. 54). If the circuits are not as indicated, reverse the wires. If circuits are correct, perform normal diagnostic procedures outlined in the 1986 Aerostar Shop Manual (17-02-6).
