Radio - Speaker Popping Noise With Wipers ON

86ford18 Article No. 86-9-3

RADIO - POPPING NOISE HEARD IN SPEAKERS WHEN WIPERS ARE TURNED OFF OR ON - VEHICLES WITH GRAPHIC EQUALIZER ONLY

FORD 1986 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 COUGAR

1986 Thunderbird/Cougar vehicles equipped with a graphic equalizer may make a "popping noise" through the radio speakers when the windshield wiper selector switch is turned "on" or "off".

These concerns can be resolved by removing the original wiper motor and installing a newly released E6SZ-17508-A wiper motor, which has an internal circuit to minimize this problem.

"Popping noises" heard during interval wipe operation are not caused by the wiper motor and will not be corrected by this service action. The most likely cause for noises during interval wiper use would be a defective Interval Windshield Wiper Governor Assembly (WGA) module.
