Article No. 86-12-6

NOISE - RATTLING/SCRAPING - REAR COIL SPRING - VEHICLES BUILT OCTOBER 1985 TO MAY 1986

FORD 1986 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986 GRAND MARQUIS, LINCOLN TOWN CAR

A rattling/scraping noise may be heard inside vehicles while operating on rough roads. This condition is caused by contact of the flange of the rear spring seat with the coil spring. This may be corrected by reworking the rear spring seat flange using the following procedure.

1. Raise the vehicle on hoist.

Figure 6:

2. Bend flanged edge of rear frame spring seats on both left hand and right hand side of vehicle (see Figure 6). Adjustable wrench or vice grips are adequate to bend spring seat material.

3. Do not bend spring seat flange beyond the straight line rear surfaces (see Figure 6).

WARNING: DO NOT USE HEAT ON SPRING SEAT FLANGE BECAUSE OF CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THE FUEL TANK.
