Steering Wheel - Vibration Damper Service Tip

Some vehicles may be equipped with a foam insert as an integral part of the steering wheel. When removing or installing the steering wheel and/or vibration damper assembly, this foam insert must be installed in the steering wheel using the following procedure.
Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery ground cable.

2. Remove horn pad cover by removing two or four screws from the back of the steering wheel assembly. Figure 4.

4. Disconnect horn pad wiring connector. Figure 5.

7. Remove and discard the steering wheel attaching bolt and remove the wheel. Figure 6.
8. Lay the steering wheel assembly on a clean protective surface.
9. Remove three screws from the back.

10. Remove the slip ring and back cover. Figure 7.
11. Remove the two nuts retaining the damper assembly and remove the damper. Figure 8.
Installation
1. Install damper on wheel assembly with two nuts. Tighten nuts to 1.6-1.7 N-m (14-15 in.lbs.). Figure 8.
2. Install back cover and slip ring with three screws. Tighten screws to 0.9-1.1 N-m (8-10 in.lbs.). Figure 7.
3. Using a new bolt, install wheel assembly on steering column, making sure alignment marks are correct. Tighten bolt to 31-45 N-m (23-33 ft.lbs.).

4. Connect horn pad wiring connector. If so equipped, install foam insert. Check foam insert and replace if damaged. Figure 5.

5. Install horn pad cover with two or four screws. Make sure wires are not pinched. Tighten screws to 0.9-1.1 N-m (8-10 in.lbs.). Figure 4.
6. Connect negative battery ground cable.
7. Check steering column for proper operation.
