Recall 87S36 Technical Instructions (Revised)


To ensure coupling integrity do not disconnect, twist or disturb the couplings before installing the retainer clips. However, if the coupling flanges are not locked together (female flange or O-ring exposed) disconnect, inspect and reconnect the coupling according to shop manual procedures prior to installation of the retainer clip.

1. Locate fuel line spring lock coupling on fuel supply line and on fuel return line (refer to Attachment I).




2. Position retention clip over metal portion of spring lock coupling. Position "horseshoe" shaped portion of retainer clip over spring coupling (refer to Attachment II).

All vehicles except 2.9L Ranger/Bronco II and 1985 Post Job #1 5.0L EFI F-150/250/Bronco require the large "black" clips to be installed on the supply side fuel lines and the small "gray" clips to be installed on the return side fuel line. 2.9L Ranger/Bronco II requires two (2) small gray retainers only. 1985 Post Job #1 5.0L EFI F-150/250/Bronco requires two (2) small gray retainers on fuel cross-over tube only.

3. Firmly push retainer clip onto spring lock coupling, seating clip on metal portion and "horseshoe" over coupling. DO NOT INSTALL RETAINER CLIP OVER RUBBER FUEL LINE.

4. Clamp the tether to the fuel line as shown in Attachment II.

NOTE: DO NOT USE TETHERED CLIPS UNTIL YOUR SUPPLY OF TETHERLESS CLIPS HAS BEEN EXHAUSTED.

5. Repeat procedure for both fuel supply line and fuel return line. All 5.0L PASSENGER CARS (MUSTANG/T.BIRD/COUGAR/FORD/MERCURY/CONTINENTAL/MARK VII/ LINCOLN TOWN CAR) REQUIRE FOUR (4) RETAINER CLIPS, TWO BLACK CLIPS AND TWO GRAY CLIPS, PER EACH CAR.

2.9L RANGER/BRONCO II REQUIRES TWO (2) SMALL GRAY RETAINERS ONLY.

6. Sight verify retainers are fully latched and seated over each coupling.

7. Release vehicle.
