With Resume


Speed Control Is Inoperative
1. Apply brake pedal and ensure brake lights work. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, check stop lamp circuit.
2. Check to ensure proper operation of clutch deactivator switch (manual transmission only). If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
3. Check to ensure proper operation of actuator lever and throttle linkage. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, service or replace actuator lever and throttle linkage.
4. Check to ensure proper vacuum at actuator. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 5. If not found satisfactory, service or replace vacuum hose and vacuum dump valve.
5. Perform tests on control switches and circuit. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 6. If not found satisfactory, service or replace switches and circuits.
6. Perform tests on servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 7. If not found satisfactory, replace servo.
7. Perform tests on speed sensor. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 8. If not found satisfactory, replace speed sensor.
8. Perform tests on amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 9. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
9. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Continuously Changes Up And Down (Non-Electronic Instrument Cluster)
1. Check to ensure proper operation of actuator linkage. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, service or replace actuator linkage.
2. Check operation of speedometer cable for proper routing and ensure no sharp bends or binding exists. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, service or replace speedometer cable.
3. Check to ensure proper operation of sensor. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, replace sensor.
4. Perform tests on speed sensor. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 5. If not found satisfactory, replace speed sensor.
5. Check to ensure proper operation of vacuum dump valve. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 6. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
6. Perform tests on amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 7. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
7. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Continuously Changes Up And Down (Electronic Instrument Cluster)
1. Check to ensure proper operation of actuator linkage. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
2. Perform tests on servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not satisfactory, replace servo.
3. Check operation of speedometer cable for proper routing and ensure no sharp bends or binding exists. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, service or replace speedometer cable.
4. Perform speed signal test described under ``Speed Signal Test.'' If found satisfactory, proceed to step 5. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
5. Check to ensure proper operation of vacuum dump valve. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 6. If not found satisfactory, adjust or replace as necessary.
6. Perform test on amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 7. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
7. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Control Operates But Does Not Resume, Accelerate Or Coast Down Properly
1. Check to ensure proper operation of Set-Acc switch, coast switch, resume switch and slip ring circuits. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, service or replace switch and circuit as necessary.
2. Perform tests on servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, replace servo.
3. Perform tests on the amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
4. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Control System Does Not Disengage When Brakes Are Applied
1. Apply brake pedal and ensure brake lights work. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, check stop lamp circuit.
2. Check to ensure proper operation of vacuum dump valve. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, adjust or replace as necessary.
3. Check to ensure proper operation of servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, replace servo.
4. Perform tests on amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 5. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
5. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Gradually Increases Or Decreases After Speed Is Set
1. Check to ensure proper operation of bead chain and actuator cable. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, adjust or replace as necessary.
2. Check to ensure proper operation of vacuum dump valve. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, adjust or replace as necessary.
3. Perform tests on servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, replace servo.
4. Perform tests on amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 5. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
5. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Will Not Set In System (Non-Electronic Instrument Cluster)
1. Check to ensure proper operation of throttle linkage. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, adjust or replace as necessary.
2. Check to ensure proper operation of switch and circuits. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
3. Check to ensure proper operation of vacuum dump valve. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 4. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
4. Check to ensure proper operation of stop lamp switch. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 5. If not found satisfactory, replace switch.
5. Check to ensure proper operation of stop lamps. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 6. If not found satisfactory, service lamps.
6. Check to ensure proper operation of clutch deactivator switch (manual transmission only). If found satisfactory, proceed to step 7. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
7. Check to ensure proper operation of servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 8. If not found satisfactory, replace servo.
8. Check to ensure proper operation of speed sensor. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 9. If not found satisfactory, replace sensor.
9. Check to ensure proper operation of amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 10. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
10. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Will Not Set In System (Electronic Instrument Cluster)
1. Check to ensure proper operation of throttle linkage. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, adjust or replace as necessary.
2. Check to ensure proper operation of switch and circuits. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.

7. Perform tests on amplifier. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 8. If not found satisfactory, replace amplifier.
8. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contacts.



Speed Control Does Not Disengage When Clutch Pedal Is Depressed (Manual Transmission Only)
1. Check to ensure proper operation of stop light switch. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not found satisfactory, service or replace as necessary.
2. Check to ensure proper operation of clutch switch. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 3. If not found satisfactory, replace clutch switch.
3. Examine all connectors to ensure proper contact.



Speed Control Operation Is Intermittent
1. Check to ensure there is proper vacuum to servo. If found satisfactory, proceed to step 2. If not satisfactory, service vacuum supply as needed.
2. Perform servo (throttle actuator) assembly test. If results are satisfactory, substitute known good amplifier. If not satisfactory, replace servo assembly.
3. Perform control switch and circuit test. If not satisfactory, replace horn pad assembly. Clean or service copper brushes and steering wheel ring.
