TRANSMISSION - AUTOMATIC - SHIFT LEVER MOVEMENT UNDER HARD BRAKING

MERKUR 1985-86 XR4Ti

Some 1985 and 1986 Merkur XR4Ti vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions and built before March 1, 1986 may exhibit shifter movement under hard brake application. A new rear engine support retainer, E6RY- 6054-A, is now available to service the condition.

1. Raise the vehicle.

2. Scribe a mark on the floor pan at the crossmember for reference during reinstallation.

3. Support the transmission with a transmission jack, Rotunda Number 022-00003 or equivalent.

4. Remove the bolt attaching the rear mount to the transmission extension housing and remove the catalytic converter hanger.

5. Release the wire loom clip securing the neutral safety switch harness to the crossmember.

6. Remove the nuts attaching the crossmember to the body and remove the mount.

7. Install the new rear engine support retainer in place of the existing retainer between the rear mount and the extension housing. (See Figure 12)

8. Position the crossmember and install the body attaching nuts.

9. Install the rear mount to transmission attaching bolt and catalytic converter hanger.

10. Tighten the crossmember attaching nuts to 25-35 ft.lbs. (34-48 N-m) and the bolt attaching the rear mount to the transmission extension housing to 50-70 ft.lbs. (68-95 N-m). (See Figure 13)

11. Remove the transmission jack.
