BRAKES - FRONT - SHUDDER - REVISED SHOP MANUAL DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

MERKUR 1985-86 XR4Ti

When diagnosing a report of brake shudder on the Merkur XR4Ti, it is important that the diagnostic procedure provided in the Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual, Section 12-01, page 21, be closely followed. If the condition is mostly noted at highway speed with a light brake pedal application, the cause is most likely to be front brake rotor thickness variation. This condition would be felt by the driver as a steering wheel oscillation and vehicle shudder during light brake applications.
Please note that the specifications listed in the 1985-86 Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual on page 12-01-25 and 12-20-15 for maximum allowed rotor thickness variation are incorrect. The specifications should read as follows:

0.01 mm (0.0004 in.) maximum thickness variation. If these readings vary by 0.01 mm (0.0004 in.) or more, the rotor should be replaced.
