TRANSMISSION - MANUAL - HARD TO SHIFT INTO FIRST GEAR AND REVERSE GEAR
MERKUR: 1985-88 XR4Ti 1988 SCORPIO
ISSUE: Hard shifting into first gear and reverse gear on 1985-88 Merkur vehicles may be caused by a clutch that is not fully disengaging. This condition could be caused by contaminated grease, grease that has thickened or no grease on the transmission input shaft which allows the clutch hub to bind on the transmission input shaft splines. The condition is most noticeable when a gear clash noise is heard shifting into reverse gear after the clutch has been depressed for about three (3) seconds.
ACTION: To correct this, inspect the transmission input shaft splines to determine if the grease is contaminated, thickened or if no grease is present. Refer to the following service procedure.
1. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate Merkur Shop Manual, Section 16 for service details.
2. Inspect the transmission input shaft splines and clutch disc hub for the presence and condition of the grease. If the grease is contaminated, thickened or not present, proceed to Step 3.
3. Thoroughly clean the transmission input shaft and clutch disc hub.
4. Lightly coat the transmission input shaft and clutch hub with grease, (C1AZ-19590-BA).
NOTE: THE CLUTCH DISC AND PRESSURE PLATE SHOULD BE RE-USED IF NOT DAMAGED OR EXCESSIVELY WORN.
5. Reinstall the transmission in the vehicle.
