Drive Belt - Squeal With A/C ON

^ AIR CONDITIONING - ALTERNATOR/POWER STEERING BELT SQUEAL WITH A/C "ON"

^ NOISE - "SQUEAL" - ALTERNATOR/POWER STEERING BELT WITH A/C UNIT "ON"

MERKUR: 1985-88 XR4Ti


ISSUE: A "squealing" noise from the accessory drive belts when the air conditioning is "ON" may be caused by the way the accessory drive belts are routed. The A/C belt runs off the water pump pulley. When the A/C clutch is energized, the additional load causes the A/C belt to stop the water pump pulley and the alternator/power steering belt slips on the water pump pulley resulting in belt squeal.


ACTION: Reroute the air conditioning accessory drive belt from the water pump pulley to the crankshaft pulley. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


NOTE: GLAZED ACCESSORY DRIVE BELTS SHOULD BE REPLACED TO MAKE SURE THE CONCERN IS ELIMINATED.


1. Remove the accessory drive belts from the vehicle.

2. Remove the four (4) bolts holding the water pump pulley to the water pump flange.

3. Remove the water pump pulley.

4. Remove the crankshaft damper and pulley bolt.

5. Remove the crankshaft damper and pulley assembly using Rotunda Tool T74P-6312-A.

6. Position the new crankshaft damper and pulley assembly, (E5ZZ-6A312-A) on the crankshaft.

7. Install the crankshaft damper and pulley bolt. Torque bolt to 100-120 ft.lbs. (136-12 N-m).

8. Position new water pump pulley, (E3ZZ-8509-B) on the water pump pulley flange.

9. Install the four (4) water pump pulley retaining bolts. Torque bolts to 13-19 ft.lbs. (17-25 N-m).

10. Reinstall the alternator, power steering pump and water pump accessory drive belt as originally routed, Figure 2.

11. Install the A/C accessory drive belt on the A/C compressor pulley and crankshaft damper and pulley assembly, Figure 2.

12. Adjust the tension on accessory drive belts. Refer to the Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual, Section 27-02 for service details.
