Article No. 89-10-7

EXHAUST - BLUE SMOKE DURING START-UP - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 7/15/86

MERKUR: 1985-87 XR4TI

ISSUE: Blue smoke from the exhaust during initial start-up may be caused by valve seals that are allowing oil to leak into the combustion chamber.

ACTION: Install new intake and exhaust valve stem seals that are made from an improved sealing material. These seals were put on production engines built after 7/15/86. Refer to the Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual, Section 21-05 for service details.
